HCS
is in full swing for its second season under the direction of its new
Conductor, Peter Jamieson, with a fairly interesting season of
programmes principally of Classical and Romantic music. However, having said that, the first concert
on 23rd November includes Michael Hurd’s Choral Symphony The Shepherd’s Calendar commissioned by Southampton Choral Society in
the mid 70s. The programme will also
include the Mass in G by Schubert,
Mozart cantata Exsultate, jubilate sung
by Sarah Potts and a couple of operatic arias by James Ashworth.
All the concerts will be accompanied by Ilkley Sinfonietta which was formed by Peter Jamieson some
twenty years ago to play and accompany at Cantores Olicanae concerts in Ilkley.
The Xmas Concert on 14th December will include A Christmas Cantata by Geoffrey Bush. On 15th January there will be a
Come and Sing Messiah with two prior rehearsals, in aid of the Sargent Cancer Care for
Children. Details from the Secretary –
see below. On 16th April,
the concert includes the Dvorak Te
Deum.
The Society of some 85 voices is in the process of recovering from a somewhat low ebb and is looking for new singers in most sections. Rehearsals take place in St. Margaret’s Hall, Fink Hill, Horsforth on Monday evenings from 7.30 to 9.30pm beginning 6th September.
Singers interested should contact the Secretary
Suzanne Norton on 0113 228 7751 or Peter Jamieson 01943 607305. A decent standard of music reading and
sight-singing is asked for.
